To the Editor:

Educating a child is an overwhelming endeavor when you realize the responsibility.

As parents, we want to see our children grow into responsible, happy, productive adults, take their place in society and help make the world a better place.

Preparation for a lifetime starts with small steps and consistency, building a little at a time, getting help along the way, nurturing and encouraging each child.

Living in Arizona for the past 23 years, it was shocking when we returned to Indiana and bought a home in Clay County to read the letters to the editor and articles on the school board. Talking with people around the area, it seemed like everyone was choosing sides.

I believe we need to come together and work for the main goal of educating our children. They will be the leaders of our communities in just a few short years. We need to be instilling confidence and solidarity. Everyone will need to be involved. I know there are people and groups in our communities who could and would volunteer their time. Whether it is listening to a kindergartner say the letters of the alphabet or help a third-grader with flash cards, everyone is able to help. Maybe you have the expertise to tutor a high school student in math. Sometimes, it is just smiling and giving a word of praise each week.

I want to be a member of the school and have a voice in the policies that will affect the lives of our citizens growing up and going to school here.

Children deserve to have a safe, secure school, a place to have pride and school spirit. We must offer challenging subjects of interest, give children an opportunity to explore the possibilities and create an atmosphere for the desire to learn.

I also believe this can be accomplished at a reasonable cost and not over burden the taxpayers.

We should be efficient and responsible leaders.
