Reminding the public of a Veteran's affair

Monday, May 26, 2008

To the Editor:

As the commander of VFW Post No. 1127, Brazil, I would like to take this opportunity to invite all citizens of Clay County to join the VFW Post No. 1127 and American Legion Post No. 2 in our annual Memorial Service at Old Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m., Friday, May 30 (which is the original date for Memorial Day and the Day of "Remembrance").

This was the original date of "remembrance" and we should pause and remember our Veterans (past, present and future).

It would be nice to have a reasonable response from the citizens and Veterans of all services to participate on that day.

After that service, we will be traveling to Clay County Health Center, where we will perform another Memorial Service for the residents of that health center.

We have been celebrating for several days during this memorial season to remember our Veterans.

VFW members and American Legion members have been placing an American Flag at each identifiable Veteran's grave in all the cemeteries in Clay County.

There are more than 2,800 Veterans buried in our cemeteries of Clay County.

I would hope that when you visit the graves of your loved ones and as you pass by a grave marked with a flag, that you will just pause for a moment and thank all Veterans for their service to their country.

Also, for those whom have Veterans buried in our cemeteries, and when you visit their gravesites, there is no flag placed at their grave, please let us apologize in advance because we do miss some of our military gravesites.

Please feel free to take an American flag, which will be at the entrance of the cemetery and place it on your loved one's grave.

We also want to invite all citizens to the Calcutta Cemetery at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 1, for their Veterans Memorial Service. The American Legion and VFW Color Guard will also be there to help "remember our Veterans."

As a last though if you, as citizens of Clay County, want to help out our deployed troops overseas, please contact VFW Post No. 1127 or the American Legion Post No. 2 as both facilities are gathering items to send to the troops, and we are sending out packages almost once a month.

I would just ask that you remember the Veterans during this Memorial season.

Sincerely,

Les. W. Walden,

Clay County Veterans Service Officer of Clay County
