Reader defends commissioners

To the Editor:

As a long-time resident of Clay County, I would like to respond to Jodie Thomas' letter about the county roads.

I'm sure she didn't realize that there are 800 miles of county roads to maintain. That is the distance from Brazil to New York City.

Can you imagine maintaining a two-lane road with only 23 employees. I think the commissioners and the staff of the highway department deserve a little more credit than Mrs. Thomas was giving them.

All three commissioners do a wonderful job for the county. However, Mr. Charlie Brown, the president of the commissioners, goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Not only does he work full-time, but his salary is the same of those that work part time.

So the question was asked by Mrs. Thomas, "what can Brown do for you?" Absolutely, he has and will continue to do for the residents of Clay County.

Also, Mrs. Thomas said how can the county spend so much on a bridge repair. Obviously, she has not priced concrete, or rebar lately. Or perhaps she hasn't noticed the rising cost of fuel these days. So unless Mrs. Thomas can repair bridges herself, then please don't pass judgment on anyone in the county or those that work for the county.

The commissioners and the highway superintendent are doing a wonderful job and deserve more respect than Mrs. Thomas gives them.
