No one is fixing current crisis

Sunday, October 19, 2008

To the Editor:

"The nation's immediate problem is that while the common man fights America's wars, the intellectual elite sets its agenda. Today, whether the West lives or dies is in the hands of its new power elite: those who set the terms of public debate, who manipulate the symbols, who decide whether nations or leaders will be depicted on 100 million television sets as 'good' or 'bad.' This power elite sets the limits of the possible for Presidents and Congress. It molds the impressions that move the nation, or that mire it."

-- Richard M. Nixon, 1980

The recent bailout only brought into focus something that has been continuing for some time now. We've been losing our jobs, our marriages, our children, and even our lives to some sort of social demon that seems to be unchallengingly sucking the life right out of us.

Is McCain the answer? Is Obama the answer? Who is going to fix this for us?

The answer, I'm sorry to say, is that no one is going to fix this for us. We were once a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Who brought us the Federal Reserve, a foreign private bank that wields such power over our lives? Republicans and Democrats. Who brought us the "Free Trade Agreements" that freely take our goods and our jobs and our money to our enemy, The Communist Republic of China? Republicans and Democrats.

Who brought us the role of policing the world and spending countless (and unaccountable) money to do so? Republicans and Democrats. Who pays for it in money and lives?

Us, our children, and complete strangers in foreign lands. Who wants it? Not us. Who is profiting from it? Not us.

Alternatives, anybody?
