'Hoorah' for the band

In the late 1930s, and early 1940s, Friday night high school football games called for the Brazil High School Band to parade on United States 40 at noon time.

Ahead of the band marched the school mascot, who carried a sign that read, "Football Tonight."

There wasn't too much traffic on U.S. 40 in those days, so one police car could trail the band from State Road 59 to Meridian Street.

There was a special happening as the band passed by Walnut Street.

A fine gentleman named Morton Decker (Mort, if you will) who would clap his hands and call out "Hoorah for the band" as we passed by.

That was a good band then, but look at what it has become: State champions, again and again.

I was a member of that band of yesteryear.

Now, it's my turn to stand on the corner and call out "Hoorah for the band."
