Commissioner responds to letter

Sunday, January 31, 2010

To the Editor:

This is in response to Rick Sanders' letter to the editor recently published in The Brazil Times on Jan. 25.

There was a team from Rose Hulman Institute who came and gave suggestions on how to take care of the traffic problems on Kennedy Crossing and Hendrix Street. The suggestions they gave the Clay County Commissioners have taken action on.

I stand corrected if wrong, but to my knowledge, no one had been killed on Kennedy Crossing until Northview High School was located out of town to State Road 340 West.

My heart felt sympathy goes out to the parents of children who have lost their lives in accidents in that area. However, when driving, one should drive according to the weather and road condition.

Just recently, when the snow came, there were 15 reported accidents the first morning before 8 a.m. I came from Terre Haute and never slid a tire.

But, I observed on Friday Jan. 22, 15 cars at the 4-way stop sign did not obey the law and stop.

Although this is just a suggestion, what if at the time of dismissal of students, traffic was redirected away from Kennedy's Crossing to other well traveled roadways?

Northview has a closed campus; and I know how I was when I was a student. Changes have been made to the road, now it is time for the students to step up to the plate.

Clay County Commissioner
