Letter to the Editor

American Legion members thank all for support

Sunday, September 16, 2012

To the Editor:

To all Legionnaires:

First off, we would like to thank all of you for your loyalty to Brazil Post 2. Post 2 has come a long way from June 2011, when it was $25,890.85 in debt to where it is now with all debts paid off. Special thanks to all who made donations, and those that renewed their membership, the SAL, Ladies Auxiliary, Ladies Color Guard and the Legion Riders, the merchants of Brazil (especially Oak Ridge Golf Course), The Brazil Times and the V.F.W. for allowing us to have meetings at their post.

We are actively trying to find a new location to open Post 2 again, with the only stipulation that it has to be in Brazil City limits. If anyone has any ideas for a location or a major fundraiser, please contact one of the officers or come to our meetings, which are the second Thursday of the month at the V.F.W., at 7 p.m.

We currently have 338 members, but only 10 to 15 people coming to the meetings. We don't have all the offices filled, but if you don't want to be an officer, you can still serve our legion by getting involved and coming to meetings.

We have completed an audit for last year, and it is available to be reviewed by any member. Also, at every meeting there is a published treasurer's report handed out to everyone who attends, which shows all money taken in and how it is spent.

With all the confusion and the hasty closing of the Legion, the new officers were unable to find records of past expenses but audited what books we did find.

We are starting fresh and can't really do anything about the past, but we will proceed to look and plan forward. The current trustees and officers are committed to not letting pitfalls of the past resurface.

Even having paid off our current debt, we will need operating capital to pay liability insurance and other expenses.

Current officers are as follows:

Commander: Randy Kaelber

Adjutant: Lonnie Boyce

Financial Officer: Anthony Smiley

Sergeant of Arms: Wayne Parkins

Chaplin: Jim Young

Trustees: Jim Cassidy, Harry Grigsby, Ray Johnson, Wayne Parkins, Walt Ter Meer and Jim Young.

Thank you for your time, and we hope to see you at a future meeting.
