Kiwanis club readies for annual parade

It's that time of year again. Mark your calendar!

The Brazil Kiwanis Annual K-Day Pancakes and Sausage Feast and Parade is Saturday, Sept. 22.

The feast is from 7 a.m.-noon, at the V.F.W. Post No. 1127, 303 S. Depot St., Brazil.

The parade lineup starts at 1 p.m., from Depot Street, west on National Avenue. It begins at 2 p.m., traveling National Avenue east to Kroger Plaza.

Brazil Kiwanis sponsors the Key Club for high school/secondary students ages 15-18 and is the world's oldest and largest service program for students.

One of the projects of the Northview High School Club is the queen/princess and king/prince contest.

Candidates sell tickets for the pancake/sausage feast.

Winners are determined by ticket sales and are recognized with a coronation Thursday evening, Sept. 20.

The Indiana Kiwanis mission is Riley Children's Hospital by sponsoring and supporting different projects to meet the needs of children and families, including the purchase of ambulances equipped, like "Hospital on Wheels."

Currently, fundraising is in the process to purchase another ambulance.

Internationally, Kiwanis joined UNICEF in launching the Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and Neonatal Tetanus.

Brazil Kiwanis is supportive of both of these projects along with local missions.

It offers two scholarships to Clay County students, 4-H and Boy/Girl Scouts, occasional special requests or needs, etc.

The BVG program, "Bring Up Grades," is a past program of the Brazil Club and is proposed to be re-instated.

For ages 6-12, it recognizes rewards and celebrates students' academic improvement.

Brazil Kiwanis meets the first and third Thursdays at the Pizza Hut, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Recognizing the limited time and resource concerns, Kiwanis is family orientated.

To mentor and provide for youth is our No. 1 priority, which means joining together in community service, which requires maybe five hours or less per month.
