Reader thanks late resident

To the Editor:

Every once in a while, one gets a second time around chance in a lifetime to pay tribute to a person and having that chance for the children of Clay County in need, I find that the late "Shorty" Kenneth Stewart has done it again.

Yes, Shorty was killed on United States 40 east, a little more than a year ago, and I remember that he had gathered together more than 200 stuffed dolls and animals (new) and donated to me to get them out to children for Christmas.

Having belonged to the Clay Optimists, I promised to do just that and having a number left over after giving out to needy children of our community, we donated the remainder to the Knightsville Men's Club whom further got them out to children at our local hospital.

Well, Shorty Stewart did it again.

His wife of many years phoned me recently and said that Shorty had been gathering more Christmas treats for children, and she had just been so grief-stricken, that she had put off many things but wanted to make sure that Shorty's gifts for the children would get given out this year.

Living through grief for a loved one of many years takes the love of God, the love of family and the love of friends whom understand.

With that said, Mrs. "Shorty" Kenneth Stewart phoned me and brought a very large box of toys for needy children for this old fellow to give out.

Santa's helper, Garry Howard, local Deputy of Clay County, will (is) drafted for this chore. In memory of "Shorty" Kenneth Stewart, killed on United States 40 while trying to get an injured animal out of traffic, is remembered once again.

Rest easy my friend. Some children will enjoy Christmas again, and with your help, we moved some people and got a VA Van, a clinic in Terre Haute, and a contracted nursing home in Greencastle.

Brazil just wasn't halfway between Indianapolis and Terre Haute.
