Low-fat vegetarian diet for holidays

Sunday, November 18, 2012

To the Editor:

Hispanics in the United States are much more likely to develop major cardiovascular disease risk factors, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, compared to Hispanics living outside the United States, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

As a registered dietitian, I know it doesn't have to be this way.

A low-fat vegetarian diet is scientifically proven to help reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity and some forms of cancer.

This holiday season, let's continue to improve our health by celebrating with meals rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.
