Perspective, by Jason Moon, Managing Editor
Even though I have lived here for only 16 years -- my wife loves to point this out -- Clay County feels like home.
I grew up near Clay County, but honestly, I'm not familiar with the county's history.
But I'd love to learn more.
This year marks a special reminder to all residents of Clay County. For 125 years, The Brazil Times has existed, providing news to the residents of the county.
Harvey Henkel and Samuel Grimes founded The Brazil Times in 1888. The first office was set up on South Meridian Street.
In 1918, The Brazil Times moved to 119 E. National Ave., Brazil, and was under the operation of James Raper and George James.
In 1973, George James and Margretta Raper Cassel sold their interests of the paper to Nixon Newspapers, and in 1975, the newspaper moved to its current location, 100 N. Meridian St., Brazil.
The paper was again sold in the late 1990s to the Paxton Media Group before Rust Communications purchased it in 2001.
In the coming weeks, The Brazil Times' editorial staff is asking all Clay County residents to share their memories for a special commemorative issue planned in the near future.
The goal is to set up the newspaper like it may have appeared in 1888.
Some stories live with us forever. No matter how old we are, we will never forget them.
For example, the disappearance of Billy Martin in 1957 will always be on the minds of county residents.
Likewise, the still-unsolved murders of Tonya Pickett, Ricky Mustard and Jennifer Stockrahm will continue to live on.
The Times is asking readers to share their memories of printed stories with us to add to the commemorative issue.
We want all of you to be included in this endeavor. Tell us what you think are the most significant stories to ever hit Clay County.
Feel free to e-mail your memories and stories to scoop1j@gmail.com, or call 446-2216 Ext. 231 and share the treasures.
We can't do it alone. We want your input.
Share it with us.
