My Uncle Charlie was extremely smart. He was an engineer for NASA. Really, he was—at Cape Canaveral, no less! But he was also ornery and loved to tease. Unfortunately, I was one of his favorite targets. Uncle Charlie loved to tell me that “A brain is a terrible thing to waste.” He would shake his head at some silly thing I’d said or done and tell me that I had only so many brain cells and if those cells were damaged or destroyed, I would live with deficient number of working brain cells for the rest of my life. ...
