It's all the little things

To the Editor:

I am sure at some point while growing up, we have all heard the old saying, "it's the little things in life that matter most."

The older I get, the more truth I find in that statement.

Maybe it's because in this day and age, there doesn't seem to be many "little things" moments, so when one does happen, it has a greater impact and longer lasting effect on me.

Last night was one of those moments.

Clay County Humane Society was dispatched to go on a run on Murphy Avenue where two puppies had been held up in a drain pipe for approximately 24 hours.

The Clay County Sheriff and three deputies met shelter employee Marlon Matthews on the scene.

Due to the terrified puppies' lack of cooperation and unwillingness to exit the 35-40 yard drain pipe, a decision was made to call the fire department rescue.

The fire department used a water hose to gently push the pups, one at a time, through the drain pipe and out the opposite side where they could be safely caught and given immediate attention.

The shaken-up pups were wrapped in blankets and taken to the shelter where they received loving encouragement, a nice meal, fresh water and a warm safe bed to sleep on.

There were three independent organizations working toward one common goal: The rescue and preservation of the lives of two young puppies.

These moments are the ones that matter most to me and ones that I will forever remember because it's during these moments that we can see the beauty of the human heart and the true character of a man.

To all those individuals who responded to the call, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude and thanks for all your kindness and compassion.

But most of all, for giving me a "little things" moment to cherish.

Darlene Hayes,

Clay County Humane Society Secretary
