Clay County Historical Society to meet Oct. 7

Sunday, September 29, 2013

The Clay County Historical Society will meet Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., in the lower level of the museum.

The speakers will be Fredia Modesitt and Vickie Mace, who will present history about people, places and things from the year 1913, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Old Post Office Building, the site of the museum.

The public is invited to attend the meeting.

Construction on the building began in May 1911 and was dedicated Feb. 15, 1913.

It's final cost was $56,723.

The new post office was built at the corner of National Avenue and Washington Street, with the property being purchased from Hannah Shannon in December 1908.

In July 1910, even before the contracts were let, a controversy was born.

The exterior of the building was to be built with Bedford Limestone, and not the buff-colored "Brazil Brick," for which the community was well known.

According to reports, local concerns won out and plans were changed to use brick from the local clay plants.

Those interested are invited to witness the well-preserved interpretation of the Breaux-Arts style building Saturday, Oct. 5, from 6-9 p.m., and meet some characters from Clay County's treasured past during "Night at the Museum II," an interactive guided tour.

Following the event, Brazil Main Street, Inc., will offer residents the opportunity to watch the film, "Night at the Museum II," on the Brazil City Hall Lawn, with free popcorn being available.

The Clay County Community Foundation will also be making grant presentations at City Hall at 6:30 p.m., for its 2013 grant cycle.

The museum is open Monday through Friday, from 1-4 p.m., and on Saturday, from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Group tours are available by calling the office during business hours.
