Above is the remains of a home on North Davis Street that was gutted by fire Monday afternoon. The occupants of the home were able to get out safely.

A local family was not injured after a fire destroyed their home on Monday afternoon.

Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett said the fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. at a home in the 400 block of North Davis Street.

A family of four was occupying the house as guests of Brazil residents Jackie and Denver Rodgers at the time of the blaze. The Rodgers were out of town at the time of the fire visiting a sick relative in Terre Haute.

"The home was pretty much destroyed," Bennett said.

The fire chief said the male woke up to the sight of flames climbing the walls and ceilings, adding he quickly managed to get everyone outside to safety before crews arrived to extinguish the flames.

Preliminary investigation found the cause of the fire to be electrical, Bennett said.

American Red Cross was on hand to assist the family, and Bennett said the Brazil Police Department will offer assistance, as well.
