Knightsville resident upset with pothole

Sunday, July 12, 2015

I am writing to express my deep disappointment in our government. I was driving on East National Avenue on June 26 at about 10:20 p.m. All of a sudden I hit something and it felt like the front of the car had come off. I immediately realized I had hit a big hole in the pavement. I continued east on U.S. 40 to my home in Knightsville. It soon became apparent something was wrong with the front end of my car as I accelerated it would shake. Sure enough I had broken a belt in the radial tire when I hit that hole.

To say the least I was upset by what had happened but being a good citizen I decided the officials should be notified about this hazard. So I drove back into Brazil and went to the Brazil City Police Dept. and reported the hazard to the young lady at the desk. She assured me she would let them know and I left. I walked west on National. I wanted to see what I had hit. Sure enough there was this hole with a very sharp edge and much to my dismay there was white rock in the bottom of this hole, not only in the hole but on the curb and sidewalk. That's right, someone had thrown some rock in this hole and left it. Well, to make a long story short, I waited for someone to come and make sure no other unsuspecting driver damaged their vehicle. I am sad to say no one came as I waited until 1 a.m. walking around the block to get some exercise.

The reason I am so upset is that same hole remained untouched and remained a hazard for the whole weekend and as far as I know hasn't been fixed as I write this letter on Monday morning June 29. Why didn't the city do something about this hazard? I realize this road belongs to the state; however, at the very least, I would have thought the city would have notified the state or the contractor working on this project. You expect us to drive where cars would normally park. You need to fix that part of the highway so we don't damage our cars. I am sure I am not the only individual who damaged their car as a result of hitting this hole. Incidentally, I was traveling about 15 miles per hour when I hit this hole and believe it or not it put the car in such a bind it caused the hood to become unlatched.

Shame on whoever put white rock in this hole and left it for the weekend!
