Help letter carriers stamp out hunger on May 13

To the editor::

Saturday, May 13th marks the 25th anniversary of one of America’s great days of giving — the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food drive.

Each year, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations from our customers to benefit local food pantries.

The need for food donations is great! Evidence of this is the many food drives that take place during the course of the year. “Hunger knows no season” was the theme of an ongoing food drive at a local bank.

Our food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations at Thanksgiving and Christmas. As we approach summer, supplies may be low at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.

Participation is simple. Leave your donation in a bag by your mailbox and your carrier (or one of our volunteers in orange t-shirts) will pick it up.

In Brazil, please have your donations out from 9 a.m. to noon.

Your donation never leaves town! At the end of the day, the food is taken to the pantries we are supporting.

Brazil — Clay County Emergency Food Pantry. Senior Citizens of Clay County Food Pantry.

Staunton — Staunton United Methodist Church Food Pantry

Knightsville/Harmony — Church of the Living Christ Food Pantry

Center Point — United Methodist Church Food Pantry (Center Point)

Bowling Green — Clay City Food Pantry

Donations may also be left at Walmart from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the Brazil food pantries will be there to answer your questions about their services.

Monetary donations will be accepted again this year. Please do not give cash to your letter carrier! They will be busy enough without having to keep track of cash and the Postal Service prefers that letter carriers do not carry cash. Checks can be written to: NALC Branch 670 — food drive. We will cash the checks and forward the money to our pantries. Cash may be given at the collection table at Walmart or at our coordinators station located behind the Brazil Post Office.

No donation is too small! Please give what you can — one never knows when fate will send you to a food pantry.

Please help us “Stamp Out Hunger.”

Sincerely

Karen E. Stearley

Branch President NALC #670
