COVID-19 first death in Clay County

Although the information is not posted on the website at the Indiana State Health Department (ISDH), on Tuesday Clay County Public Health Nurse Kim Hyatt announced the first confirmed death from coronavirus in the county.

The local resident had been hospitalized for the illness, dying Monday. Further details are not being released due to the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Hyatt confirmed a total of positive COVID-19 cases in Clay County remains at 19. Official information reports 12,097 positive cases have been reported among the 6.7 million residents in Indiana, with 67,6264 residents tested, and 630 deaths reported to the ISDH. (The numbers are considered to be provisional, reflecting only the information published to the ISDH.)

Of the remaining COVID-19 cases reported, Hyatt confirmed one remains hospitalized, and the remaining in self-isolation, with six reported to have recovered.

The number of tests throughout the state is reported to be 51,115, with officials saying the number of test results is going to continue to rise as more laboratories are available to process them. Test results can be processed within 24-48 hours.

On March 6, ISDH confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in a Hoosier with recent travel, with the first confirmed case in Clay County on March 28. On March 16, ISDH reported the first death in Indiana due to COVID-19, with the first death in Clay County April 20.
