TOP STORY OF THE DAY - COVID-19 Testing Site dates changed

Clay County Public Health Nurse Kim Hyatt confirmed Tuesday afternoon the dates for the upcoming COVID-19 testing site at Forest Park will take place on May 21-23. The previous arrangements for Sunday have been canceled due to state testing sites being closed Mondays.

Hyatt apologized for the late changes, but state officials decided to close the testing laboratories after the initial planning for this testing site was created.

The Indiana State Health Department and the Clay County Health Department have scheduled a free nasopharyngeal swab drive-thru testing site for COVID-19 at Forest Park on May 21-23, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. No appointments are necessary for Indiana residents, who must provide proper identification. All participants must enter Forest Park from State Road 59 entrance and follow signs to the site.

The testing site will be set up at a Familiar shelter location in the park: In the area where the Brazil Rotary Club usually sets up to sell tickets during the annual Fourth of July Celebration.

Those who can participate include those in the high-risk categories, including over the age of 65, diabetic, obesity, high blood pressure, heart, lung issues, or other underlying health conditions.

Over the age of 12 with symptoms.

Cases stay at 32

The number of COVID-19 cases in Clay County remains at 32, according to health officials. The 10 patients previously diagnosed are currently recovering at home, one patient is hospitalized, and 10 more diagnosed with COVID-19 since the beginning of the outbreak in March have recovered. One death due to the virus was reported on April 20.

Health officials confirmed 456 residents have been tested as of May 19.

The Indiana State Department of Health reports confirms 28,705 positive cases among the 6.7 million residents in Indiana, with 189,330 residents tested, and the reported deaths at 1,678.

The ISDH is providing new information regarding probable deaths caused by COVID-19. These deaths, 146 as of May 19, are those for which a physician listed COVID-19 as a contributing cause based on X-rays, scans, and other clinical symptoms. None have been reported in Clay County at this time.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US) and the World Health Organization, there are 4,735,622 diagnosed cases throughout the world, with 316,289 deaths reported.
