TOP STORY OF THE DAY: COVID-19 data stable, and protected by HIPPA

The good news regarding the COVID-19 pandemic crisis is the number of positive cases is remaining stable in Clay County at 56 as more tests are completed. However, a fourth death was confirmed late Monday afternoon.

Officials at the Indiana State Department of Health announced early during the crisis that personal information regarding those diagnosed with COVID-19 is protected by the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box said during Governor Eric Holcomb’s daily press conferences; the department would respect the privacy of individuals and families struggling with the ramifications of the virus.

Clay County Health Nurse Kim Hyatt confirms the information is not released through the local office. However, families can choose to release COVID-19 details if they want to do so, including death notices.

On Thursday, the ISDH reported 13,395 new tests performed in 24 hours (June 24-25), with 523 new positive results, and nine new deaths throughout the state.

In the Wabash Valley, the ISDH data shows Clay County is near the middle of the ranking for COVID-19 positive cases when considering neighboring counties in District 7.

Much of the current COVID-19 Data for the eight counties have slightly changed for at least a week, including:

• VIGO - 214 Positive Cases among the 5,575 tested, with eight deaths.

• GREENE - 184 Positive Cases among the 1,776 tested, with 29 deaths.

• PUTNAM - 159 Positive Cases among the 2,1306 tested, with eight deaths.

• CLAY - 56 Positive Cases among the 1,494 tested, with four deaths.

• SULLIVAN - 41 Positive Cases among the 1,391 tested, with one death.

• OWEN - 41 Positive Cases among the 1,301 tested, with one death.

• PARKE - 21 Positive Cases among the 712 tested, with no deaths reported.

• VERMILLION - 13 Positive Cases among the 680 tested, with no deaths reported.

The ISDH reports 43,655 positive cases among the 6.7 million Indiana residents, with 444,252 residents tested, and 2,394 deaths reported. The state’s data suggests that the increasing number of Indiana residents tested has lowered the overall percent of Indiana residents, which is confirmed positive as of June 25 to 9.8 percent. (The numbers are provisional, reflecting only the information published to the ISDH.)

Indiana residents whose physician listed their death with COVID-19 as a contributing cause to a total of 192. These deaths are diagnosed by medical staff based on X-rays, scans, and other clinical symptoms with the absence of a COVID-19 test.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US), there are 2,336,615 cases reported in the United States, with 121,117 deaths.
