COVID-19 on the rise throughout state, and locally

Clay County’s positive COVID-19 cases have slowly increased since the beginning of July to 66.

On June 30, the Clay County Health Department confirmed 59 positive cases among the 1,584 residents tested and four deaths.

As of July 13, CCHD confirmed the totals were 66 positive cases, 1,835 residents tested, and five deaths reported.

Indiana State Department of Health officials has been vocal about the recent “uptick of overall positive COVID-19 cases” slowing Gov. Eric Holcomb’s announcement of issuing Stage 5 of the Back On Track Indiana reopening plan. The more cautious Stage 4.5, has been in effect since the number of positive cases began to climb a few weeks ago.

Holcomb said residents needed to remain vigilant about protecting their health and well-being as Stage 4.5 remains in place at least until July 17.

The COVID-19 pandemic began in Indiana on March 6, when the ISDH confirmed the first case, with the first confirmed death due to the virus on March 16. On May 18, the first case of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19 was announced.

The first Stay-At-Home mandatory order by the governor took effect at 11:59 p.m. on March 23 and remained in effect until the Back On Track Indiana started in early May.

On July 13, the ISDH reported 5,844 new tests performed during July 10-12, 452 new positive results, and two new deaths reported throughout the state.

• VIGO - 261 Positive Cases among the 7,358 tested, with eight deaths.

• GREENE - 199 Positive Cases among the 2,341 tested, with 32 deaths.

• PUTNAM - 174 Positive Cases among the 2,873 tested, with eight deaths.

• CLAY - 66 Positive Cases among the 1,835 tested, with five deaths (data corrected by CCHD).

• OWEN - 53 Positive Cases among the 1,758 tested, with one death.

• SULLIVAN - 51 Positive Cases among the 1,621 tested, with one death.

• PARKE - 28 Positive Cases among the 920 tested, with no deaths reported.

• VERMILLION - 20 Positive Cases among the 880 tested, with no deaths reported.

District 7 shows a positive COVID-19 test rate at 4.3 percent, with the total of residents tested at 19,594 (154 new test results) and confirmation of a total 850 cases, with 11 new cases.

The ISDH reports overall 52,037 positive cases among the 6.7 million Indiana residents, with 570,409 residents tested, and 2,569 deaths reported. The state’s data suggests that the increasing number of Indiana residents tested has lowered the overall percentage of Indiana residents to 9.1 percent. Indiana residents whose physician listed their death with COVID-19 as a contributing cause to a total of 193: Deaths diagnosed by medical staff based on X-rays, scans, and other clinical symptoms with the absence of a COVID-19 test.

Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 reached a high of 1,799 on April 13 and dropped to a low of 595 on June 26. Since then, the number of hospitalized patients is increasing throughout the state to 764 on Monday (July 13).
