The first day of school is always a busy and anxious one, but this year COVID-19 made is harder.

Launch Academy students received masks from members of “The Delts” of the Delta Theta Tau sorority.

“We do not require masks at Launch Academy; however, if a child wears a mask, that is awesome,” said Director Pam Fischer, about the first day of school. “I normally do not wear a mask. Today, however, due to allergies, I have had a dry cough. So you better believe I put that mask right on. I do not have COVID, but we are working tirelessly to ensure COVID-19 protocols are met.”

Launch Academy staff members, said Fischer, take student temperatures and record them before leaving their car to enter the building.

There are COVID-19 protocols for all types of activities throughout a school day that students and staff members have to become familiar with, including:

Using proper hygiene during restroom breaks, watching to make sure students wash their hands properly, and sanitizing the toilet seat, sink, and all handles.

Staff members have to spray cubbies between classes.

Fischer explained that when students rotate to a new classroom, one instructor is taking them while another instructor is wiping down tables and chairs disinfecting them.

“Every child has their own individual supplies for class; there is no sharing. We are also social distancing our snack time,” said Fischer, who admits she cleaned toilets at least 100 times. “It’s ok! It is what needs to be done.”
