CLAY COUNTY THROUGH THE YEARS: The First United Methodist Church of Brazil

Wednesday, April 7, 2021

The present congregation of the First Methodist Church of Brazil had its beginning in 1839. At first the small Methodist Society met in homes. As the town grew and the membership increased, they began meeting in the school house. Mr. Owen Thorpe erected a log building, which was the first Methodist church. It was furnished in 1844 at a cost of $4.40. For several years this log church was used until the building became dilapidated, making it necessary for a new church building. A frame church became a reality and was dedicated August 29, 1858; the new church cost $1,500.
