TOP STORY OF THE DAY, brought to you free by WICU: Moderna vaccinations show no local reactions

Monday, April 19, 2021

The Clay County Health Department’s Vaccine Clinic at the 4-H Fairgrounds, 6656 North State Road 59, has provided 5,750 Moderna vaccines at the fairgrounds as of this past weekend.

Clay County Health Nurse Kim Hyatt has confirmed that people vaccinated at the clinic have reported no reactions during the required 15-waiting time.

“We ask people to wait 15 minutes after the vaccination,” said Hyatt about the safety protocol. “We have had two younger people pass out. I would not call that a reaction necessarily; that sometimes happens with younger people, who get worked up and nervous.”

The Moderna vaccine is the only one available at the fairgrounds, and only people 18 and up can participate.

People are concerned about the recent news about people experiencing clotting after being vaccinated, but Hyatt has no data about any local cases.

“The usual side effects I’m hearing from people are headache, muscle aches, slight fever, tiredness, sore arm,” she said, adding some people only experience one or two symptoms. In contrast, others report feeling worse. “Sometimes after the first shot, sometimes after the second, but some people don’t have any effects.”

The symptoms usually last a couple of days, added Hyatt, who said, “It just varies.”

Hyatt explained the vaccine is much like the annual flu shots, “You could sill get COVID-19, but it should be the mild form after being vaccinated.”
