The Brazil Police Department is starting a K9 unit, adding a four-legged officer to its force.

The K9 Unit is being spearheaded by Brazil Patrolman Chandler Damon, a 2013 Northview High School graduate. Damon then went to Ball State University and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology.

While completing his degree, he worked for the Clay County Justice Center, and then accepted a position with the Brazil Police Department shortly after graduation.

When discussing with Patrolman Damon why he wants to be a K9 officer, he explains how “giving back to the community that gave to me as an adolescent has always been a goal of mine.”

A love of dogs also contributed to his interests.

“Law enforcement is something I saw myself doing from a very early age,” Damon said. “As far as a K9 goes, I’ve always had a passion for dogs. When I was young, I showed dogs in obedience and showmanship in Clay County 4H. I’ve raised German Shepherds my entire adult life, and I believe I have the skills necessary to have a successful team between K9 and K9 officer.”

Patrolman Damon is currently visiting local businesses in an attempt to obtain donations to help assist the K-9 unit program.

If you own a local business, or you know someone within the community that would be looking to donate to a program seeking to increase safety and security within Brazil, please reach out to the newly-created Facebook page titled “Brazil Police Department K9 Unit.”
