Backpack pickup set Saturday at hospital

Ascension St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil will once again be providing free backpacks and school supplies to Clay County children and families in need, who may not otherwise be able to afford them.

Like last year, the backpacks will be filled with pre-packaged school supply kits.

The backpacks will not be customized per individual school supply lists as in previous years.

Forms are available at the hospital or with this story online at www.thebraziltimes.com.

Forms must be completed and returned to the hospital no later than Monday, July 5.

Pickup dates for those who registered will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 17.

Eligible schools are Clay City, Eastside, Forest Park, Staunton, Van Buren, Jackson Township, Meridian, North Clay and Northview.

Reunions

• The first Royal Reunion is slated for Saturday, July 17, 2021, at two o’clock in the afternoon. It is held in conjunction with the Clay County 4-H Fair.

All former fair queens and princesses of Clay County are cordially invited to attend. The event will be held in the hospitality building on the fairgrounds. Each queen and princess are asked to bring their tiara and sash if available.

• The Bridgeton High School Reunion will be held July 25th at the Collom’s General Store in Bridgeton, IN. All graduates and previous attendees are welcome. Registration begins at 11 AM, with dinner being served at 1 PM. Cost is $20 per person. Contact Larry Jackman 812 249 0850 or Mary Payton 765 365 2922 for reservations.

• The Northview Class of 2003 has made some changes to an upcoming reunion previously announced.

The reunion will now be Saturday, October 9, at 5 p.m. at the Bad Apple Saloon. It is cash only with an ATM on site.

Volunteering

The System of Care of Clay County needs some help later this month, hoping to get volunteers to take care of setting up and tearing down the fair and scheduling people to sit at the booth.

This is a great way to promote your agency/organization and the valuable work that they do!

Gardening

A local Urban Soil Health Working Group, P.H.I.S.H. (People Helping Improve Soil Health) will present an end of the year gardening program at the ISU Community Gardens, 219 N. 11th St. Terre Haute, IN, 47807, on Saturday, August 21, 2021, from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

The free event will focus on composting, year-end gardening tasks, and will feature a live demonstration on incorporating cover crops into a garden system.

The event will take place outdoors on the lawn of the Community Garden. Free giveaways including pollinator and cover crop seed and educational materials will be provided. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for the weather. All ages are welcome to attend. Event hosts are requesting pre-registration for the event to assist with planning. P.H.I.S.H., founded in 2019, is comprised of Clay, Greene, Sullivan, Putnam and Vigo County Soil & Water Conservation Districts, Purdue Extension, and the Indiana Natural Resource Conservation Service. The group provides soil health training, education and outreach to community members.
