IVY JACOBS PHOTO - Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1127 Commander Neil Brown presented a $5,000 donation to Brazil Patrolman Chandler Damon to support the new K9 program Friday, July 30, reaching the goal of $20,000. Last week, Damon stopped by the VFW Auxiliary meeting to accept another $500 check for the program. Patrolman Damon said the department was thankful for community support of the program, which he will start next month when the dog is ready.

The Brazil Police Department reaches the $20,000 goal for the new K-9 program thanks to the community and the efforts of local veterans.

Brazil Patrolman Chandler Damon spearheaded the effort to create the unit. He stopped by the local VFW post a few weeks ago to explain the program to the comrades at the post.

Commander Neil Brown said it was a "no-brainer" to support the program during a check presentation Friday, July 30. (Watch a video of this presentation online at www.thebraziltimes.com.)

"We were all in," said Brown to Damon, Chief of Police Clint McQueen, and Brazil Mayor Brian Wyndham during the check presentation.

Damon also stopped by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1127 Tuesday, July 20, to accept a $500 donation and speak with Auxiliary members about the program.

"We have received so many messages, donations, and support over the past few weeks of fundraising," said Damon, who visited many businesses, local groups, and residents in recent weeks to talk about the program. "As we continue to push towards our final goal, we wanted to tell you all thank you for being such a supportive community."

Damon said the community had donated approximately $15,000 to the program. He will start training with the dog in August. It will be six weeks before the special unit will be on active duty in the community.

"We have received so many messages, donations, and support during fundraising," said Damon, who is currently building the kennel for the dog. "As we continue to accept donations for the program, becaue this is just to get started. But we want to take the time to tell everyone thanks for being such a supportive community."

BPD's last K9 unit included Handler John Hood and K9 Bane. The duo is still active in the community because Hood transferred to the Clay County Sheriff's Department. Currently, the team is being recertified and will return to duty within a few weeks once the police vehicle is ready for the K9 Bane to travel safely.
