Friday, November 12, 2021

Failure to yield at a stoplight at State Road 59 and US 40 led to an accident involving a school bus and a semi-truck Thursday evening.

Clay Community Schools responded to the scene, as well as Brazil Police and Clay County Sheriff's departments, Brazil Fire Department and STAR Ambulance members.

School officials confirmed 50 students and three staff members were returning from an event when the accident occurred around 10:15 p.m.

Coordinator of Health Services for Clay Community Schools Lynn Stoelting, BSN RN, was at the scene to help students and notify parents. She said there were a "few bumped heads," but no serious injuries were reported. The students were allowed to go home with their parents. On Friday, the school was following up with those families.

"We were very blessed," said Superintendent Jeff Fritz. "It could have been much worse. We are grateful it wasn't."

According to the Brazil Police Department, bus driver Richard M. Wetnight, 75, Brazil, reported traveling west on US 40 at the stoplight. When it turned green, the bus continued onward when a south semi-truck crashed into the back right wheel.

En route to a truck stop at I-70, Rodrigo B. Oliveira, 47, Florida, told authorities the light was yellow, and he did not attempt to slow down. Oliveira was cited for failure to yield at a traffic signal.

Both vehicles were transported away by Poor Boys Towing.
