A multi-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon on south State Road 59, just a couple miles north of Clay City, sent one to the hospital and first responders to clean up a 100-gallon fuel spill.

When officials arrived at the scene, they discovered an accident involving two passenger vehicles and a semi-truck.

Allegedly, the two passenger vehicles were traveling north on SR59 when the second vehicle rear-ended the one in front that was attempting to turn near the intersection of 59 and County Road 600 South. The impact caused the second vehicle to swerve into the oncoming traffic, causing a second collision with an oncoming semi-truck.

Officers shut down SR 59 while crews cleaned up the wreckage.

The semi-truck stopped in a field next to SR59 and ultimately leaked an estimated 100 gallons of fuel into the area.

It is unknown what caused the first collision, but the female driver of that vehicle was transported by STAR Ambulance to Terre Haute Regional Hospital. (Due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, further information about the motorist’s medical condition is unavailable.)

The driver of the vehicle rear-ended, and the semi-truck driver was uninjured. The officials are not releasing names due to the ongoing investigation.
