STATEHOUSE (Aug. 18, 2022) – Longstanding Clay County farms recently received Hoosier Homestead awards for being in operation for 100 years or more, according to State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) and State Sen. Eric Bassler (R-Washington).

“Family farms helped make Indiana one of the top states for agriculture, and many of them are still operating today,” Heaton said. “It’s important for us to recognize what they’ve accomplished through generations of hard work and commitment.”

Located in Clay County, these farms were presented Hoosier Homestead awards:

• The Jones Farm, in operation since 1870, received centennial and sesquicentennial awards;

• The Killion Farm, in operation since 1830, received the sesquicentennial award; and

• The Milligan, Brown & Thomas Farm, in operation since 1863, received centennial and sesquicentennial awards.

“It’s important we don’t take for granted the work our farmers, past and present, have put into Hoosier land,” Bassler said. “I admire these families and their willingness to continue the tradition of those who came before them.”

These farm families were among more than 100 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.

Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.

Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. Since its inception in 1976, more than 5,800 farms received the designation of Hoosier Homestead.
