Saturday, October 8, 2022

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department released formal details about the ongoing investigation into Saturday, Oct. 1, shootings. Details remain limited about the investigation.

A 911 call on Saturday, around 1:51 a.m., reported a shooting in rural southern Clay County near Clay City. The first caller, later identified as

Leah Butters, 55, Clay City, stated she had been shot by her boyfriend and needed help.

While deputies and other first responders were dispatched to the scene to provide life-saving measures for multiple gunshot wounds, 911 dispatch received another call.

During this call, dispatchers were told multiple males had been shot and were driving to the hospital. They eventually met with STAR Ambulance and other officers at the Pilot Gas Station.

As a result of the gunshot injuries, Butters was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, where she is still listed in critical condition.

As medical staff rendered aid to two males with gunshot wounds at Pilot Gas Station, it was determined that one male was deceased due to his injuries. The male was later identified as Tim Hayden, 53, Coal City.

The second injured male was transported by ambulance to a Terre Haute Hospital. He was later identified as Jerick Hayden, 23, Coal City.

(NOTE: Due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, additional information about the medical condition of victims is unavailable. The Brazil Times will also not release further details to protect the integrity of active investigations.)

According to the press release by CCSD, deputies believe the domestic incident began earlier in the evening when personal property was damaged. When the three men confronted Butters about the damage, it was during this altercation that multiple people fired several shots, ultimately leaving two injured and one deceased.

Assisting the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was Brazil Police Department, Indiana State Police, Parke County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Volunteer Fire, Posey Volunteer Fire, Lifeline, and STAR Ambulance.
