It’s considered an urban legend, a creepy yet fun story for those who like Halloween or scary stuff.

Yet, with graves dating back to the Civil War, 100 Steps Cemetery or Carpenter Cemetery is considered the most haunted in Indiana.

Note: The cemetery hours are from dawn to dusk, so visiting anytime after dark is forbidden and illegal.

Located in Cloverland, near the 700 block of North County Road 675 West, South of US 40, the legend is based on a frightening math problem.

If you can count 100 steps while walking to the top of a staircase at the cemetery at exactly midnight, the former caretaker (deceased, of coursed) will appear and share a vision of your time and manner of death.

Pay attention to your steps if you are not courageous enough to hear the details and choose to run away. Because you need 100 to get out alive: Not one less or one more.

If you count right, you can escape to change your future.

A variation to the legend is that if you try ad trick the caretaker, you will be thrown to the ground by a painful blow and bear the mark of the devil - or handprint - for days. Apparently, this legend began in the late 1800s when “grave robbers” obviously were busy in the area, and corpses could go missing.

Although the cemetery replaced the original steps due to damage, this reporter counted 100 to reach the top, but in the daytime, of course, and didn’t count while leaving before dark.

Besides all the spooky fun, remember to be respectful and courteous when visiting any cemetery.
