Officials at multiple locations reported smooth sailing with the voters, machines, parking, traffic and weather as Election Day ‘22 proceeded.

Polling centers included those in Carbon, Center Point, Brazil, Harmony Coalmont and Clay City.

Alicia Huffman, voter registration clerk at the Clay County Courthouse, said Tuesday afternoon nearly 30 percent of registered voters were turning out, and reported zero issues with voting machines as of 3:30 p.m.

Kevin Humpf, inspector at the Center Point Volunteer Fire polling station, said it was nice to see residents eager to vote, even in the early morning hours as polls were open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m.

“It’s been pretty busy. We’re almost up to the numbers we had in the spring for the full day,” Humpf said Tuesday morning. “Didn’t have a line, but there were maybe about a dozen people ready this morning.

“The machines are running smooth so far,” he added.

Meanwhile, at Grace Chapel in Brazil, voter Hailey Hofmann told this reporter why she voted, having recently given a speech to her peers about the importantance of voting.

“I just found it very empowering to be a woman and be able to just exercise my rights. That was my inspiration,” Hofmann said. “I took time out of my college day (at Rose-Hulman) to do this.”

Asked what it’s like for a college student in 2022 in today’s political climate, she said voters must stand by their beliefs.

“It’s very different. You have to watch what you say a lot because there’s lots of different opinions floating around,” she said. “But it just feels like a very empowering time to have your own opinion, and be able to stand by that.”
