Brush fires kept local fire departments busy Thursday.

Although the National Weather Service out of Indianapolis issued an Elevated Fire Danger through Wednesday evening, to avoid open burning if possible because uncontained fires may spread quickly.

The conditions - occasional wind gusts combined with warm temperatures and low relative humidity values, along with dry fuels receptive to burning - remained a problem.

Members of the Van Buren and Dick Johnson volunteer fire departments responded to a 911 call shortly after 12:30 p.m. A homeowner in the North Northwood Drive area reported the fire.

Firefighters from both departments quickly contained the fire and stayed on the scene to put the hotspots out.

A short time later, just before 2 p.m., Posey Volunteer Fire Department was notified of another brush fire at 5600 North Happy Holler Road. A brush truck from the department responded.

Once on the scene, Fire Chief Cody Barnard was able to quickly contain the fire by himself. However, there was not enough water on the brush truck to put out the hotspots.

A request for backup from Seelyville Fire Department was made, and equipment and manpower arrived at the scene of the fire.

Cory Volunteer Fire Department was also requested for backup but was later advised the fire was contained.
