TOP STORY OF THE DAY - Don’t forget: Holiday Fire Safety

Nearly half of home fires occur during December, January, and February. According to local fire safety officials, it’s best to make sure old or damaged lights are replaced or switched to LED lights because decorations cause 25% of holiday fires.

“If you have a live tree, keep it hydrated,” said Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett, who urged people to be careful when hanging lights. “Using ladders can be dangerous.”

Other holiday tips include:

Always check decorations for damages before using, and replace those that do.

Never leave holiday decorations on while sleeping or away from home.

Decorations are temporary; remove them after the holidays

Separate and label indoor and outdoor decorations

Store decorations in a dry location that is safely out of reach of children and pets

“Use clips instead of nails or screws when hanging lights,” said Bennett.

“Don’t run extension cords or lights cords through doors or windows. And turn off lights during the day.”

Bennett said people should not take electrical issues lightly, “Tripped breakers shouldn’t be overlooked.”
