TOP STORY OF THE DAY: Brazil woman taken into custody on felony arrest warrant

Clay County Justice Center - Dawn Miller

Officials say offenders are responsible for following their conditions from court cases or release from jail, especially if they are supposed to be on the Indiana Sex or Violent Offender Registry.

A Brazil woman was arrested this week on an outstanding warrant issued from Clay Superior Court. Dawn Marie Miller, 47, was taken into custody Tuesday by the Brazil Police Department (BPD) on level 5 felony allegations of Failure to Register as a Sex or Violent Offender.

Miller is incarcerated at the Clay County Justice Center with a cash bond of $7,000. Miller has appeared for an initial hearing, and a bench trial is scheduled tentatively for June 2023.

People convicted of a sex crime or violent crime often result in ramifications they must follow. The courts in Indiana establish the terms of the length a person needs to be up-to-date on this registry.

Sex Offenders usually have up to seven days to register, while Violent Offenders have 72 hours to comply and must re-register each year until the sentencing term is met. In some cases, offenders must register for the rest of their lives at the local sheriff’s department where they live.

“The Clay County Sheriff’s Department does that locally,” said BPD Assistant Police Chief Dennis Archer. “They have officers there that can help an offender. For instance, an offender may be moving, and they might violate the terms. A deputy can help them stay compliant.”

When applying for the registry, people usually have to provide personal information, including:

Home addresses are where moving to

A description of the criminal conviction

Work address

Email addresses, phone numbers, and any other forms of communication

All social media profile information

An updated description and photo

These details are usually public information, meaning anyone looking up information could find it. The Indiana Sheriff’s Association maintains the Indiana Sex & Violent Offender Registry at https://indianasheriffs.org.

The information is not provided “as a way to harass or threaten offenders or their families. Harassment, stalking, or threats may violate Indiana law.”
