Drone finds escaped inmate

After three hours on the run, a drone caught sight of an escaped inmate, leading to his capture a few blocks from the Clay County Justice Center(CCJC).

Clay County Sheriff Brison Swearingen says the Indiana Department of Corrections (IDOC) was contacted to assist in capturing Christopher Dale Myers.

Myers, a trustee, performed inmate worker duties Sunday morning when he allegedly broke a locked door and fled from the facility.

The IDOC brought an unmanned aerial vehicle to the CCJC. Once in flight, the drone located Myers less than three blocks from 611 East Jackson Street. Myers was taken into custody and returned to the jail facility.

Swearingen said Myers could face potential new charges after a review of the case file by the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office.

Swearingen said he wanted to thank the Brazil Police Department and the IDOC for their assistance and added the administrative review of the incident would continue.

The Indiana Department of Corrections was contacted, said Swearingen, to assist in the capture of Christopher Dale Myers.

ORIGINAL STORY - Clay County Sheriff Brison Swearingen confirmed reports that an inmate escaped today from the Clay County Justice Center around 11 a.m.

Inmate Christopher Dale Myers, a trustee, was performing inmate-worker duties when he allegedly broke a locked door and fled from the facility.

The sheriff said detectives and deputies are attempting to locate the escaped inmate. The U.S. Marshall Service and surrounding counties have been contacted to assist in finding Meyers.

Myers, 43, Montezuma, was incarcerated on a Failure to Appear charge out of Clay Superior Court on Feb. 6.

Myers is described as a white male, approximately 6'7", with brown hair and eyes, and around 240 pounds.

As shown in Myers' mugshot, provided by the sheriff's department, he is heavily tattooed.

The jail administration is conducting an internal investigation to determine what protocols were violated that led to the escape.
