When Northview’s boys basketball team takes the floor in November, there will be a new name pacing the sidelines as the program’s head coach.

On Thursday afternoon, Michael Byrum announced via his personal social media accounts that he was resigning from his position as head boys basketball coach at Northview High School, effective immediately.

Byrum released the following statement, explaining his decision to step down from his post after six seasons at the helm:

“After doing a lot of reflection, I have made the decision to resign from my position as the head boys basketball coach at Northview High School, effective immediately. Over the last nine years, I’ve had the opportunity to coach in the Northview boys basketball program as both the head coach and an assistant coach. Without hesitation, I can say that it was a true privilege and an honor.

First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Jeff Fritz, Mr. Chris Mauk, Mr. Scott Buell, and the Board of Trustees of Clay Community Schools for giving me the opportunity to become the head boys basketball coach at Northview High School six years ago. I greatly appreciate the opportunity.

I would also like to thank my current coaching staff and all of my former assistant coaches for all of their hard work, sacrifice, and their willingness to be great role models to our players. I am greatly appreciative for your loyalty and effort that you put into helping improve our basketball program. I am also very proud of my coaching staff who have volunteered their time to provide opportunities for skill development to all elementary aged students in our community. It was my honor to create and facilitate a program that fostered these opportunities for the youth in Brazil.

Finally, I would like to thank all our former and current players for allowing me to have the opportunity to coach them. Over the past nine years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing people and to coach some special young men. The players on my teams represented both Northview High School and the community of Brazil the right way both on and off of the basketball court. I am very thankful for that opportunity and we were able to make some lifelong memories. Some of my fondest memories coaching in the Northview boys basketball program over the past nine years will be the relationships that were built with our players, the three sectional championships that we won and advancing to the regional championship game in 2021.

As a coach, your goal should be to leave the program in better shape than what it was when you entered it. Without any hesitation, I can say that I believe this is the case. I would like to wish the future coaches, players and the Northview Athletic Department the very best success moving forward.”

Byrum was the head coach of South Vermillion from 2012-2014 before joining Clint Weddle’s coaching staff as an assistant in 2015. When Weddle stepped down, Byrum was hired to be Northview’s head coach in 2018.

During his six years leading the Knights, Byrum finished with a record of 72-79. He led the program to a 2021 sectional championship and then the regional championship game – marking the first time Northview had won a regional semifinal game since 2003-04 – as well as an appearance in the 2022 sectional championship game.

Northview finished the 2022-23 season with a 9-16 record, which came to an end in the sectional semifinal.
