High schoolers interested in law enforcement careers may now apply for a free, weeklong leadership academy to be hosted July 10-14 at the Indiana Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch, Clay County Sheriff Brison Swearingen announced today.

Students, parents or guardians may pick up detailed information during regular business hours at the Clay County Sheriffs’ Office, 611 E. Jackson St., in Brazil.

Applications for this year’ s inaugural Sheriff & Police Explorer Academy will be accepted by the CCSO through June 30. No fees will be charged, but a sports physical will be required for attendance, Plasse said.

”This year’5 pilot academies will offer a mix of public safety training and fun recreation,” said Scott Minier, executive director of ISYR. ”During morning hours, students will learn about K-95, first aid, crime trends, substance abuse, cybercrimes, dispatching and investigations. Afternoons will be spent team building while swimming, fishing, kayaking, flying drones, shooting archery and safely riding ATVs.”

Twenty—four student leaders will be selected from applicants representing Clay, Greene, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vigo and Vermillion counties. Some young leaders will stay at ISYR for the week; others may be transported each day to and from the 62-acre training retreat outside Brazil, IN.

Minier said additional counties and students will be invited to participate in future years as more privately funded facilities are completed.
