Still looking for things to do with the family this summer? Soul Light Ministries has a great time planned for you on July 29.

“We will be having a Family Fun Fest on July 29 from 3 pm -7 pm. There will be tons of games with prizes, food, corn hole tournament, free petting zoo and other great activities. Karaoke and live music will also be going on,” explained Maranda McKinney.

Humphry the camel will be at the petting zoo. He was a big hit at the Live Nativity outside of Brazil last Christmas,

The event, located at 2186 W US HWY 40, is being held to raise money for the ministry. They are wanting to remodel the former motel into a thrift shop.

“When we are able to open the thrift shop, in addition to providing affordable clothing, household items, and furniture to the community, we want to use the income from the store to put back into the community. The first plan we have is to provide back-to-school supplies and clothing for local kids. We plan to donate to other organizations already established routinely including humane society, food pantries, and homeless projects. We also want to host dinners for the elderly and veteran communities. We hope to also host a lot of family activity events, like movie nights, light shows, and different things like that,” McKinney said.

McKinney noted they are “looking for event sponsors and local businesses that might want to donate gift cards or baskets for raffle prizes as well.”

Also located at the former Villa Motel is Bright Soul Wellness.

“The medical clinic opened May 29 and we have been seeing patients every day. We are accepting new patients and offer a wide range of services. We are looking to add some new, exciting things soon, such as massage therapy and IV hydration services. We are planning to do some interactive discussions on our Facebook page that will be fun getting everyone involved and people can check it out and follow on Bright Soul Wellness Center,” said McKinney, who is the Nurse Practitioner at the clinic.

In addition to the clinic and the remodeling for the thrift shop, there is a community.

“The garden is producing lots. We plan to donate much of the produce to local food pantries. We did not end up having a lot of turn out as far as people getting their own plots, but we have had several volunteers come to help out every once in a while. Some of the local boy scout troops came by and we will be having McKinley Hill Church of Christ summer camp kids that will be volunteering to help maintain the garden, so that is exciting and much appreciated,” said McKinney.

McKinney commented on how much they appreciate all of the support they have received.

“We are always looking for volunteers, so let us know through a phone call (812-531-8683) or the Soul Light Ministries Facebook page what you like to do and how you might like to get involved,” encouraged McKinney.
