Free textbooks, breakfast and lunches during upcoming school year
Indiana families don’t have to pay for textbooks anymore.
In a special session Monday night, the Clay Community School Corporation Board of Trustees voted in favor of House Bill 1001.
A law passed in the 2023 legislative session requires each public and public charter school to provide curricular materials to each student at no cost.
Charging families for curricular materials, including textbooks, iPads, and Chromebooks, in the past potentially created learning barriers for students and families who faced paying hundreds of dollars for course materials per child.
Gov. Eric Holcomb championed the law for Indiana, one of a few states that still allowed curriculum fees. The bill provides $160 million to cover the materials.
Superintendent Timothy Rayle was excited to announce the good news on his “5 Minute Focus,” which can be viewed at: https://in02200674.schoolwires.net/cms/lib/IN02200674/Centricity/Domain/8724/Tex...
Rayle was also excited to announce that families will not have to pay for breakfast or lunches for all students during the upcoming school year.
“We are ensuring every student has the resources they need to thrive,” said Rayle. “With free breakfast and lunch, every child can start their day, ensuring they have the energy and focus they need to make the most out of their education.”
