FOG SEALING?

If traveling south on State Road 59 past State Road 46 into the Clay City area, you might want to find an alternate route due to “FOG Sealing” on the road.

NOTE: There is an electronic sign that warns southbound motorists about a quarter of a mile north of the 59 and 46 intersections before you have to decide about an alternate route.

Work crews in the area explained FOG sealing is a part of the chip and sealing process.

A fog seal is an application of a specially formulated thin liquid oil (which is not hazardous to the environment) and water on an existing paved surface needing a bit of rejuvenation; crushed stones are then distributed over the liquid after the chip and sealing are complete. The process is often called “fogging” because it is sprayed on the road and is one of INDOT’s (Indiana Department of Transportation) most common pavement preservation techniques. As the name implies, INDOT confirms a full chip-seal treatment seals cracks and helps prevent potholes from developing.

According to IDOT, as long as a road is structurally sound, this routine “chip and seal maintenance” helps reduce dust.

Oxidation, the fading in color, and the development of narrow cracks can be restored using FOP Sealing to restore flexibility every few years.

State Road 59 is open for local traffic, but the work crews said it is best to let the road cure if possible.

Once completed, traffic crews will install permanent pavement markings for the roadway, making the pavement markings more prominent.

INDOT TIPS

Motorists can also work to protect their vehicles when driving through chip seal project areas:

Use alternate routes

Slow down. Higher speeds can cause loose stones to scatter and damage vehicle paint and windshields.

Increase distance between vehicles. Leave space between you and other vehicles to reduce damage caused by loose stones.

Follow posted work zone signage, use caution, and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone.
