SUBMITTED - Chance with a friend's car he is working on.

Chance Staley is a senior at Clay City High School. In his free time, he enjoys working on cars and trucks. Chance's interest in rebuilding vehicles started when he was given a totaled truck to work on.

“I had to go through the work of finding parts and piecing it back together.”

Staley built the truck's transmission all by himself in his garage, only taking him two weeks to complete it.

“I wanted to build it since it had lost third and fourth gear[s] and I was too broke to take it anywhere.”

Building the truck's transmission is one of Chance's proudest accomplishments, as well as buying his Nissan 240SX after months of searching for one.

“I wanted to find one since I always liked older Nissans and have some other buddies with similar cars who helped me learn about the car.”

Currently, Staley is working on his Nissan 240SX.

“I'm... trying to get the interior clean and have been looking for a manual transmission to swap in.”

In the future, Chance plans to find a career that allows him to continue working on cars.

“I plan on attending Ivy Tech or UTI [Universal Technical Institutue] to further my knowledge on becoming an automotive technician.”

Staley was motivated to become an automotive technician when he realized he genuinely enjoyed working on cars.

“I realized I had fun [working on cars] when I had to change the doghouse on my truck.”

Chance also participates in the Northview automotive class and gets to fix vehicles as part of his high school classes. He enjoys learning and building skills for his future career while he is still in high school.

“My favorite part of high school has to be when we went to the Ivy Tech automotive skills contest and learned of some jobs and demos on car parts.”
