Suspicious fire at local elementary school under investigation

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office and other multiple agencies are investigating a suspicious fire on the roof of Meridian Elementary School early Sunday morning.

The Clay County 911 Dispatch confirmed an unidentified 911 caller reported the fire around 4:20 a.m.

Within one minute, a Brazil Police Department officer was on the scene, reporting visible flames on the roof.

Members of the Brazil Fire Department were able to get the fire out by 4:40 a.m.

Due to the nature of the fire and the impending investigations, Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett said further details are unavailable to protect the investigation's integrity.

Superintendent Dr. Tim Rayle also confirmed the fire but said there was no interior damage and said, “School will proceed as usual. Safety ensured.”
