Since picking up a bat when she was just a toddler, Clay City senior Lexi Thompson has had one goal in mind when it came to the game of softball – find a way to play at the collegiate level.

After putting up eye-popping offensive statistics (.426 batting average, 22 doubles, 30 home runs and 88 RBI over the first three years of her high school career) and playing shortstop for a program that’s won three sectional, three regional and one semi-state championship, Thompson caught the attention of numerous schools interested in bringing her aboard.

Among those included Indiana Wesleyan University – the school Thompson had always hoped to attend for as long as she can remember.

So, on Wednesday afternoon inside the Eel Dome with dozens of family members, friends, teachers, teammates and coaches surrounding her, Thompson signed her letter of intent to play softball at IWU, making a dream come true.

“It’s incredible. I’ve dreamt of this day since I was probably three,” said Thompson. “I just can’t believe it’s finally here. I’m so excited to go to Indiana Wesleyan. It’s my dream school.”

What was it about Indiana Wesleyan that drew Thompson to the school?

“I went there and the first thing I noticed was everybody was so incredibly nice. I ran into random people, and they were asking me about my day. It was great,” explained Thompson. “The athletics facilities are great. The campus is nice, and they have a perfect thing for what I want to do, which is to go for a ring, obviously, as well as get a great degree.”

Thompson expects to play shortstop and catcher – just as she has during her three years at Clay City – with the Wildcats.

Because of that, she’ll be able to put her sole focus into doing whatever it takes to get the Eels back to the state finals. Thompson said that signing before the season also takes any added pressure off her shoulders and will allow her to enjoy the final ride in purple and white.

“I feel a lot more calm now that it’s done. It was kind of a whirlwind trying to get everything figured out. But now, I can just focus on high school ball,” said Thompson. “It’s motivating me to do the best that I can do because I only have one more year left of high school and then I’m off to college. So, I’m going to refine my skills and do the best that I can. Hopefully, we can go to state again.”
