With the year almost over, The Brazil City Parks and Recreation Board is closing in on its budget. The financial report at the October 10 meeting showed that 18.94% of the year's budget is left.

"It's going to be tight," explained Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet McClellan.

The Park's Superintendent Report from Marv Moon included:

• Replacing four wax rings on toilets and installing two new toilet seats at the pavilion.

• Fixing and cleaning the sewer at the comfort station after a vandal put two rolls of toilet paper in the toilet and flushed them.

• Repairing seven picnic tables.

• Cleaning walkways at Forest Park.

• Spraying and clearing under bridges at Forest Park.

• Painting the large gazebo at Forest Park.

• Clearing poison ivy at Forest Park.

• Mowing the skate and dog park.

• Installing the straw mat at the new basketball court.

• Loading all the chippings from the disposal of the storm damage.

With the current budget amount, the purchase of pool supplies will have to wait until the beginning of next year. The four poles for lights around the basketball court must also be shelved for next year.

"You're talking anywhere from $400 on the low end to $600 a piece," said Moon.

Haunted Hollow Park or Haunt in the Park will occur in Forest Park the last two weekends of October. Three shelters will be closed off for haunted shelters as well as hayrides.

Because shelters 9 and 10 and the bridge are out of power since the storm damage and setting it up will be costly, there must be adjustments to Christmas in the Park and setups.

There will be another Kickoff to Summer next May. Kevin Stallcop and his daughter Sarah Conley are already planning for next year's event, which will take place on May 18 and have a different name, Reese & Kayte's Kickoff to Summer.

Like this year, next year's event will have live entertainment, a car show, a vendor market, and a kid zone with bounce houses supplied by Great Dane.

Some of the money raised from the event will be donated to local organizations.

"We're wanting to raise money that benefits the community, and it's going to draw families to spend time together," said Stallcop.

In the future, the event might grow into a two-day event.

Board comments included discussion of the 18 hole disc golf at Craig Park being set up and will partially go into the primitive campsite area that is no longer used. Areas that were not mowed will now need to be for disc golf next year.

The winterization of bathrooms was also discussed. The comfort station at Forest Park currently costs $300 a month to heat.

Many other parks winterize and close bathrooms. Vandalism is also high in the winter months.

The idea of closing the comfort station and bringing in a port-a-potty for winter was discussed to help aid costs. The port-a-potty rental would be $106 a month.
