The community’s concern for Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett is inspiring, but there are consequences when arrested for drinking and driving.

Brazil Mayor Brian Wyndham believes public officials must be transparent with the public in good times and bad.

“Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett will have to go through the legal system like anyone would,” said Wyndham, who wants the situation to be as transparent as possible. “Jake is a 28-year veteran without a blemish on his record. We all know the family has experienced a difficult and tragic year. But the City will stand behind Jake and his family through this.”

The mayor spoke to Bennett on Monday after bonding out of the Clay County Justice Center, and confirmed Bennett has taken some personal time off.

Bennett is scheduled to appear in court on January 24th.

Bennett, 49, was remanded to the Clay County Jail on a C misdemeanor charge of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated after hitting a parked car near the intersection of Lambert and Illinois streets around 8 p.m. Sunday evening.

Further details are not available at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
