Middle School Minutes

Finally, the Middle School Minutes article is back! Christmas Break and winter weather have hindered the writing. Let’s see what has been happening at North Clay Middle School.

The North Clay Knights Boys Basketball program has a lot to be proud of this season! The sixth grade boys finished 12-2 ( A Team) and 10-2 (B Team). Coach Roembke and Coach Fowler could not have been prouder in the first year coaching. Both seventh and eighth grades won WIC Conference Championships with undefeated seasons. “I thought that both teams brought their best basketball at the end for the WIC Conference championship,” said Coach Lancaster. The future looks bright for Northview Basketball.

Now that the boys’ teams seasons are complete, it is time for the girls’ teams to take the court. The eighth grade girls are coached by Luke Lancaster. They are off to a 0-1 start with the loss against Woodrow Wilson. The seventh grade Knights are coached by Erica Garrison. They have played two games and are 1-1. Finally, the sixth grade team is coached by former Northview Knight Katie Buchanan. They are off to a hot start this year with a 3-0 record. More updates will follow as the season progresses.

This week’s teacher focus is on Sixth Grade Science. Mrs. Ashley Sims is in her eighth year of teaching at North Clay. She was a graduate of both West Vigo High School and Indiana State University. Outside of the classroom, she keeps pretty busy with her two very active sons. They keep her and her husband busy running from the football field to the baseball diamond. Mrs. Sims’ favorite part about science class is the hands-on labs with all of her “ scientific toys”. Many students even remember her Zipline Project. This Science teacher loves working at North Clay. “ I work with some great people who invest a lot into making this a great place. I genuinely look forward to going to school and interacting with my former and current students. Their personalities, sense of humor, and excitement for science make for some great days. I love sixth grade because it is an exciting year for students to transition from elementary to middle school,” she states. North Clay is grateful to have this amazing teacher!

Besides teachers, there are many other staff members that make North Clay great! The first person people see when they enter the building is Mrs. Kayla Fisher. She is in her third year as North Clay’s Secretary. Prior to this role, she was an Instructional Assistant at Staunton Elementary. She transitioned to middle school because her son was about to become a sixth grader. She also is the sponsor of North Clay’s Ambassadors. Mrs. Fisher says, “The office is a very fast paced place to be and always has a lot going on. Having to keep everything straight and in an orderly manner can be overwhelming at times, but yet rewarding more.” She plays a vital role in making North Clay run daily. Staff and students are lucky to have Mrs. Fisher.

North Clay offers tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Each grade-level has teachers stay after for homework help, studying for a test, or remediation. Mr. Patton stays after for the eighth grade tutoring students. He says, “ North Clay is a cool, hip place to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So, stay cool and go to tutoring to get help with your work.” Students must be picked up out front at 4:30. If parents or students are interested in this extra help, they just need to pick up a permission slip in the front office. This is a great opportunity for students to get one-on-one assistance.
