SENIOR SPOTLIGHT - NHS WILL WILSON

Thursday, February 15, 2024

Will is a senior at Northview High School, and he is actively involved in the choir program. He is a member of the jazz and mixed choir as well as a lead performer in the upcoming school musical “The Little Mermaid Jr.”.

“After school I practice for our musical “The Little Mermaid Jr.” that debuts March 14th and 15th, and I'll be playing Sebastian.”

In his free time, Will helps his grandmother with their beehives and works several part-time jobs.

In the future, Wilson plans to attend Indiana State University and pursue a major in music business.

He states that Northview choir director Mrs. Buchanan suggested this idea and led him to truly consider it.

“That's where I want to start. I don't know if that's where I'll stay – life changes – but for now it's a start in the right direction.”

Wilson explains that Mrs. Buchanan has had a significant impact on him and has helped him become who he is today.

“When I came to high school as a freshman, I was scared and terrified of people. I didn't know who or what I was. The next coming year as a sophomore, the musical came around and I made a leap of faith and tried out. I got a couple leads, and I was terrified. She took me and ran with it. Now I'm so far from that scared little boy I once was. Thanks to her, I completely overflow with confidence in any situation. If the stage and her have taught me anything, it's [to] always be confident in what you're doing and no one will ever know you ever had doubt.

Will states that Mrs. Buchanan is his role model and admires her ability to give students the confidence they need.

“She takes kids who are quiet, the ones who try to hide in the crowd. Then she helps them step out of their box and they become a completely different person. Her ability to give confidence to a person and completely transform them is inspiring.”

Will's favorite part of high school has been participating in the school musical and its preparations.

“It takes a lot of time and energy from everyone, staff and cast alike, but in the end the product is something to be proud of, regardless of the trials and tribulations it took to get there.”

Wilson also enjoyed the choir Disney trip during spring break last year, naming it his favorite high school memory.

“While in Disney we attended a master class and went backstage and created an edited clip from the Lion King with our vocals and sounds. It was unforgettable.”

One of Will's goals in life is to someday be on Broadway.

“That's just a dream, but with the path I'm taking I think I can make it a reality.”

Wilson explains that he has one thing on his bucket list, and this has a special meaning to him.

“I want to be on Survivor, the game show, where they're competing on an island. It's something my grandmother and I bonded over before she passed, so I feel I have to do it for her.”
