Republic Services: Heavy Trash Pickup & Recycling

Friday, March 22, 2024

With the acquisition of Wallace Brothers by Republic Services, Republic assumed the contract with the city of Brazil. This hasn’t been without a few hiccups. Mayor Brian Wyndham has been in talks with Kenny Depasse, the head of their governmental affairs at Republic.

“I know there were some glitches in them taking over. It has smoothed out a lot. There’s still an issue now and then, but I will say this: when I call Kenny, when somebody didn’t get their trash picked up, or they’ve had trouble getting it picked up, it’s done that afternoon. They’re on it that quick, and they’re really trying to get everything smoothed out.”

The contract with the city provides for two heavy-duty trash pickups throughout the year. The spring pickups will take place April 22-25. Brazil residents should set their heavy trash out on the same day as their weekly pickup. New this year, residents can take their heavy trash to Republic for free that entire week.

“On thing they’re doing, which I thought was great, we’ve never had before. There’s going to be three days of heavy trash pickup, but for the entire week, if anybody that lives in Brazil wants to haul stuff out there, they will allow you to bring it out there for no charge.”

Brazil citizens should be prepared to show their ID to prove their residence.

Recycling has also been an issue, and Mayor Wyndham says this will soon be resolved.

“Unfortunately, there wasn’t any recycling happening. If you had yours out there, it got thrown in with the rest of the trash. Because Ray’s quit taking recycling, that’s where Wallace took it, so unfortunately, it wasn’t really happening. What Republic, I think, is going to suggest is they’ll do recycling, but the way they want to set it up, they’ll be a recycling bin, and you have to go throw it out there in their bin. But it will be recycled.”

Wyndham explains they are working on a list of what items they will take and won’t take.

“We want to get back to where the people who are concerned and everybody who does recycle will get a letter explaining what they’ll recycle and that it will really happen and not get thrown in with the rest of the trash.”
